Like finding your way? Or maybe you just like being outdoors? Either way, there’s an upcoming free event at Mason Neck State Park that you should know about.

On Saturday, August 8, volunteers from the Quantico Orienteering Club welcome newcomers to their Introduction to Orienteering event.  It’s open to all fitness levels and all ages - from children to adults – and if  you’ve ever wondered what this outdoor scavenger hunt like sport is all about, here's the chance to come out and give it a go.

Participants will learn the basics of orienteering from experienced instructors and then apply their newly acquired skills on a beginner level orienteering in the park. Registration opens at 9:00 AM and instruction will be offered approximately every 20 minutes beginning at 9:20 AM and running through 11:00 AM. Participants can either orienteer solo, or in small groups of their own choosing. All participants will have until 12:30 PM to complete their courses.

No fancy equipment is needed either – dress comfortably for the outdoors, wear a comfortable pair of athletic shoes, and bring a watch. Compasses will be available, but please bring your own if you have one. Participants may also want to bring along water or beverages.

Pre-registration is highly recommended for this popular event. Head to for more information about this fun opportunity and to sign up.

Find your way to Mason Neck State Park on Aug. 8 and you’ll find a whole new activity to enjoy year-round!
