The Friend's first river cruse to see Eagles, other wildlife, Mason Neck State Park and other places on the "Neck"  and Mason Neck was held April 26, 2014.  Over 15 different Bald Eagles were observed.  Nesting Ospreys, Great Blue Herons, and a variety of other wildlife were also seen.  The weather was perfect.  The catamaran was very stable and piloted by an experienced Captain of the Potomac River who told an interesting story about George Washington and his carriage crossing the Occoquan on a ferry.

On Friday, April 18, dozens of injured service members and supporters cycled through Mason Neck State Park to raise awareness about bicycling rehabilitation for wounded veterans.  Soldier Ride participants used a variety of equipment, including adaptive hand cycles, trikes, and modified bicycles.

Mason Neck State Park is a wonderful place to bicycle!  There are several miles of quiet wooded roads and a long paved multi-use trail.  So ride or bring your bike to the Park, or you may rent a bike at the Park.

Ospreys have returned to Mason Neck for the breeding season.

    Interesting osprey facts:
    • An osprey may log more than 160,000 migration miles during its 15-to-20-year lifetime.
    • Ospreys have a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp with two toes in front and two behind. Barbed pads on the soles of the birds' feet help them grip slippery fish.
    • An osprey hunts for an average of 12 minutes before making a catch.
Come to the park this weekend - you just might spot them.

Lorton Library Display Filled With Friends of Mason Neck Information

On 23 February the Friends of Mason Neck State Park filled the Lorton Library display case with a variety of photographs, artifacts, and information.  Please take some time to look at the display, send us your comments and, if you're inclined, fill out a membership or volunteer form located near the library display case.  We're always interested in signing up new folks to join us in support of Mason Neck State Park.  Thanks!

It was great to meet many new friends at the Supervisor Hyland's 2014 Mt. Vernon Town Hall on February 1.  Many folks (not just children!) particularly enjoyed examining the pelts and skulls, asking about the wildlife at Mason Neck State Park, and sharing stories about foxes, raccoons, beavers, and other animals that live at the Park.

On the morning of January 14, 2014, Governor McAuliffe's Administration announced the selection of Joe Elton to serve as the Interim Director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. On the evening of that same day, Joe was at Mason Neck State Park to speak at a meeting about the Visitor Center Interior Exhibit Project. Prior to this appointment, Joe has served (with great distinction and effectiveness) as Director of the Virginia State Park system since 1994.

Randy Streufert and Hillary Clawson (Friends of Mason Neck State Park) present to Joe a photograph of a bald eagle, taken by Randy that very morning on Mason Neck.

Mason Neck State Park has asked that we pass on the following invitation.  Folks who have an interest in Mason Neck and the Park are invited to meet at the Park Visitor Center at 7:00 PM on January 14, 2014, for a presentation about the Visitor Center Interior Exhibit Project. Joe Elton, VA State Parks Director, will be at Mason Neck State Park to share his vision of State Parks and introduce Johnny Finch, President of Virginia Association for Park (VAFP) and Fred Lochner / Charlie Luthin of Imperial Multimedia. As you may know the VAFP actively supports all Friends Groups throughout the Commonwealth and will play a leading role in raising and managing the funding of this project. The room layout design and theme for each display ‘panel’ will be presented. Feedback will certainly be welcome from all attendees. These exhibits are planned to represent all Mason Neck agencies in terms of a cultural history panel, Conservation Committee and the conservation effort panel, natural history panel, a fitness challenge panel that is being funding through the Park's second place award in the Coca-Cola contest this past summer, and a panel that identifies each Mason Neck Agency’s Mission and the co-operative effort to provide recreational opportunities on ‘The Neck’.

Many shallow parts of the Potomac River (and tributaries) near Mason Neck State Park have iced over during this extremely cold weather.  As a result, Bald Eagles are very easy to spot as they search for food near the shorelines and over open water.  Great Eagle watching today!
